The Close of June

Hello! Did you miss me?

Josh loves his new job. And this week it is the happy and familiar schedule he had in Yuma that I loved so much: 7-3. That is the day schedule there, and I have great hopes that someday he will be assigned permanently to the day shift. Right now, though, he's still in training and will be experiencing a little bit of all the different shifts. I think today he is getting uniforms, if they are in. I love that he will be home in plenty of time for me to leave for taiko. We even can eat together first!!

On Friday, we invited everyone we knew and sang karaoke in St. Charles. It was super fun. Everyone had a great time! The kids were supposed to go with their grandma to my niece, Sydney's first play, but the air conditioning broke at the playhouse, so they stayed at Grandma's and swam in the pool. When we picked them up in the morning we swam, too, and then came back home. Josh and Grant got haircuts, and Jake got his toenails clipped, but that was all the family togetherness we were to have. Josh got a phone call from Uncle Jim. Uncle Jim had to go to a funeral and couldn't stay with Grandma Mroczkowski, so he asked if Josh would come and spend the night there in case of emergency. He took Grant with him, and Abbie and I stayed home.

When I was closing the curtain I saw a woman walking dogs...one of which had escaped and was capering merrily around the neighborhood. Knowing that this big black dog would probably come to anyone except the woman she was supposed to be with, I went out and called the dog. Her name, it turns out, is Spirit. How apt. I did eventually get Spirit and held her until her walker came. It seems that the lady is babysitting Spirit, who wiggled out of her collar. Sadly, it was a fancy collar, and we couldn't figure out how to re-size it. And Spirit was wiggling again. So I looped the leash through the collar and they walked Spirit back home to re-adjust the collar under calmer circumstances. And then I felt like a nice neighbor and went in to watch a post-bedtime movie.

Note: When your husband is called away for the night, it is not a good idea to watch movies about women who are attacked by murderers when her husband is gone for the night.

They came home in the morning, and I started laundry. ...but I kind of fell down the stairs. Yeah. That hurt. But mostly I felt like an idiot for falling on the stairs. That's sort of a toddler/brittle old lady thing to do, and I hope that I am neither.

I made scrambled eggs with cream cheese, shredded mixed cheese and fresh tomato for dinner. And toast. It started to cloud up and storm, so we got out board games and candles. The electricity did even go out, just not when we were playing. Josh beat me two rounds at Boggle, which is usual. It's the only game I can think of that I love despite the fact that I routinely lose. then we played UNO, and I played on a team with Abbie, since she doesn't quite have the attention span for cards just yet. Josh won 3 hands in a row. The kids have also been playing checkers with him lately, but we didn't play on Sunday. It was getting close to bedtime.

Did I tell you that I read Penrod and Sam? It's another Booth Tarkington novel. He's just an amusing guy, but the story is mostly about a perfectly rotten 12 year old boy. I still prefer Seventeen. I'm glad I read it, though. Apparently it's part of a trilogy about Penrod, but I don't know if I'm going to go so far as to read them all. I've had about enough of ol' Penrod just now.

Another of my more recent projects is battling the ants that are living in my kitchen. First, I set out ant traps. That worked for about a day. Then the ants started going around them. Then, I scrubbed the @#%* out of my kitchen counters and wall to make sure they did not smell like anything appetizing, unless you happen to like soap. I moved everything to a different location. That worked for a few hours. I sprayed a little Lysol to see if it would deter them. Nope. So today I got out the real ant spray. The last straw was when I took out a "clean" cup for Abbie and it had an ant in it. I don't know exactly where they are really living, but I know they come from a crack between the cabinets and the wall, so I sprayed it two different times today. Probably what will happen is that they will start coming from somewhere harder to locate, but I'm doing my best. And I've at least made a small dent in the population. Perhaps they'll decide it's not worth the risk?

Also today, we played outside and took a walk. I have a carrot cake I was going to make. Maybe today. And Abbie poked a stick in her ear and made me cry with worry, but as near as she can tell, her ear still works.

This Friday, we are going to shoot fireworks. Josh's parents are going to leave for the lake, and they say that we can ask people over and use their house and yard. Josh is SUPER excited, but I'm not sure how many of our friends will be available. And he can't seem to give anyone decent notice. Josh, Josh, Josh... But we will be there. Maybe we'll swim again. Saturday we plan to go to Amelia's 3rd birthday party. It's in the afternoon, but I'm sure Josh plans to stay late. Sunday I had toyed with the idea of seeing my grandmother, but Josh doesn't have Monday off, and it's 3 hours away. So we will stay home, and watch the Warrenton Fair's fireworks from our deck. I am hoping to have a big, cold watermelon, too.

My mother's air conditioner broke this weekend. I called yesterday to see if she wanted to come over and visit me and my air conditioner, but she was already waiting for repair men to show up. By evening it was all better, and she was sounding much less miserable.

Sadly, we cannot go to Kansas City on June 10th. It just isn't working out. I'm sad about it. I'd been planning it a long time. But it's obviously not a good time. We're going to try again for sometime in the fall. I'm also toying with the first weekend in November as a potential Cousin Weekend, since I'm missing Sky's 21st this weekend.

Well, you know me. I'm always planning something.

I hope you have a happy week!

How It Went

Weekend of Taiko over! I am very tired today. I am not scheduling anything for today. I am going to do my very best to veg. I need rest.

Friday - Zoo:

I left the house soon after my mother came and got the kids for the weekend. I thought Jake was going to stay at the house, but he hopped back into the car with the kids. So much for him being my dog and liking me best. I picked Michelle up, and we went to help load cars. Jaci left me behind at a stoplight when we were caravaning to the Zoo, but I eventually found my way. It took a long time to get all of our equipment moved to the performance site. There was also lots of waiting, lots and lots of sweating and some allergic reactions to doing stretches in the grass. The audience was small for our first set. We played Zoku and Tenchi. I got a terrible blister on my thumb because of the humidity, and it split open and was very painful. Our second set was Ashura only, because it is long. We were all set up for Hanabi when the coordinator came to tell us he was going to quit and start the DJ music. So we carried all that stuff and only played 3 songs. We didn't even use the miyake stands or the hachijou stands. We carried those for nothing at all. And we got mosquito bites as we waited another half hour for it to be our turn to pack up and leave. On the whole...very disappointing.

Saturday - Drunken Fish

I picked up Michelle, and we were the first ones to UMSL, so we got everything out. I followed Melanie this time when we were driving. When we got to Lecledes Landing, it started to rain! It rained on us as we unloaded, but the Drunken Fish also owns the empty apartment next door, so we had a dry place to put the drums and to wait until our performance time. By then, the rain had stopped and it was less hot, although still very humid. I taped up my hand, which helped a lot but made my bachi a little bit sticky. We played a half hour set, and it was fun. I missed the beginning pose to Tobihi, but otherwise didn't make any notable mistakes, and played the chuu part to Suwako just right, if I do say so myself. Very humid, but with a nice breeze. Josh was there eating sushi, and Heather and J showed up right after we were done. Sadly, there had been some road closings, and she missed our playing. We loaded up and then Drunken Fish gave us some sushi for dinner. Yum. We also asked for some non-seafood for Laura, and they brought hamburgers and hot dogs enough for everyone! Eddie decided to see if hot dogs were good with wasabi, and the WASABIDOG was born. Very Fun. And some potentially not all there guy told us we were better than Woodstock. After we went back to UMSL and unloaded, Melanie and I switched cars.

Sunday - Missouri Scholars' Academy

Josh took me to Burger King to meet Eddie and Michelle. This time I was getting picked up. It was a nice change. We drove to Columbia and loaded drums into Mark Twain res. hall. There was lots of down time at that point, because we always just play whenever the kids are done with whatever activity is before us. Our "stage" was inside, but sadly is was very hot, and we were sweating long before we got into costume. We set up a few different ways before deciding on a direction. Then we changed and I taped up my blisters with some tape from Eddie. The one that was so bad was under a band-aid and tape. We played the set, and I did fine, with the exception of Hanabi. Don't know what came over me, but I looked like I had no clue what I was doing. Must be brain exhaustion. A second blister on my right hand split during the set, but luckily I had time to grab a piece of tape for it between songs. The only song I truly sat out for was Tenchi, which was last. Then, just as everyone else was starting to get comfortable, Eddie and I did the workshop for the kids. So I played a 45 minute set, and then played kane for another 45 minutes. Plus, I had to look super enthusiastic at the same time. WHEW! I was so tired. We wanted Japanese food for dinner, but none were open, so we had Sub Shop. I was more tickled than necessary to have a psychedelic cup that said "Grateful Bread" and "Bread Zeppelin" on it. Eddie took me back to the house, and I beat the kids home. It was nice to have a minute to sit down and admire how trashed Josh had made the house in 8 short hours, especially considering that he had been gone for at least 4 of them, himself.

The kids came home while I was in Columbia, and Josh took them to a barbecue. About the time I got home, he took them for ice cream. It's a fathers day tradition for Josh to get ice cream with the kids. The first I saw of the kids was when they pulled up and I had to wipe all the ice cream off of Abbie. What she really needed was to be doused with a bucket, but I didn't think of it until after I had gone through 3 or 4 wet wipes.

I don't know what to try and plan for this week and next. Josh still doesn't know his schedule. I'm still trying to determine if I can make it to my grandmother's for the 4th of July. I'm also trying to plan Kansas City on the 10th of July, Grant's birthday party in early August, his first day/week of school in mid-August, and what to do with the kids during J-Fest in September. But I don't know Josh's schedule.

I think Josh had a pretty good weekend. At least I hope he did. He enjoyed the sushi and the show, and even went to the boat with J and Heather while I was unloading. And I think he had a good time on Sunday, too.

Well, I'm off to change Abbie. She did have one potty training success while at Mimi's house, but that's all. Oh, well. It's progress!

Hope you are about to have a great week!

Home again, home again....

Hello! It's Tuesday. It is rainy here, and warm. Grant and Abbie are playing with toy dinosaurs, and have a blanket to represent "the muddy part". Abbie has a "pretend scallion bite". I think she means scorpion. Hee hee.

Sunday evening we came home from Colorado. We had a good visit with Brother. When we first got there, we were locked out of Brother's house! I was pretty stressed out at that point. I knew that if Brother's schedule had suddenly changed to the other shift that he wouldn't be off work until 11pm! But it hadn't. He was just running late. We ran off to Sonic, and when we came back to try again, he was home. We spent the evening hanging out together. Thursday, he went to work again, and Josh took me and the kids to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It was great. If you haven't been, they have quite a large herd of giraffes, and raised walkways so you can see them at face level. You can even feed them! Although it wasn't nearly as impressive as the St. Louis Zoo, and wasn't free, I thought it was a very well kept and well stocked zoo. It is also a good place to go if you need to burn some calories: it's on the side of the mountain, and has lots of uphill walking. The giraffes were spectacular, of course, and they also had some extremely healthy looking okapi, a tapir, a very cheerful baby orangutan, mountain lions, and a clan of naked mole rats, to name a few.

After the zoo, we drove through the Air Force Academy. We went in the south gate, stopped off at the airport and saw some monumental planes. We also were super fortunate in our timing, because it was flight training day, and there were several planes towing gliders. Then, the gliders would be released, and the "baby pilots" would practice steering and landing. We also went through the visitor center. It has a great little gift shop. The whole base is very scenic.

For dinner, we went with Brothers to his favorite local Italian resteraunt, Zio's. It was very yummy. The entrees are enormous, and then Josh talked Brother into getting dessert. (It wasn't hard to do.) He'd never tried the Italian Wedding Cake, so he got one. It was as big as a book! I laughed.

Friday, we were supposed to stay at Brother's place while some guys came to do some warrantee work, but they called early and cancelled. So I took Josh and the kids to Garden of the Gods. We stopped off at the first parking place and did a lot of walking. I took lots of pictres, too. Then we drove through the park and stopped again at Balancing Rock and walked again. Everyone had a great time.

After the garden, we went to Manitou Springs. We went through the Castle Museum first. There was a fire fighters' exhibit in the basement, and then the regular caslte above. The castle had its own chapel, which was interesting, and a room for the priest. The great hall was nice, and there was a conservatory with large windows facing the mountains. My favorite, though, was a little enclosed area off a closet under the stairs. It had the only original wallpaper in the house: blue and green fleur de lis....made with Paris Green dye. In case you haven't already been informed, Paris Green is an arsenic-based poison, that nowadays is used as an insecticide. (Obviously, this wall was separated by a locked glass.) The plaque stated that to this day, there have never been any sightings of insects in the room.

There was also a tea room. I made Josh take me there for a snack. I had tea. The kids had lemonade. We all had finger sandwiches and scones. It was so great! Well, I thought it was great. Josh gets total husband brownie points for taking me. I'm going to have to bring my grandmother next time.

On our way back to Brother's, it rained. In fact, there were tornado warnings.

Josh wanted a cheeseburger, so Brother took us to Red Robin for dinner. I wasn't hungry, but I ate the giant burger anyway. This was not a good plan. Oink!

We watched the old Clash of the Titans movie, and then showed Brother Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog for the first time. He loved it, just as I suspected.

We were going to go to the Colorado Renaissance Festival on our last morning, but it was 45 degrees and very rainy. We could accept cold and we could accept rain, but not at the same time. We had breakfast at Einstein Bros Bagels, and I had an extra yummy hot chocolate that burned my tongue. We walked around at the mall and some bookstores instead, and took the kids to the play area. We said goodbye to Brother at the Barnes and Noble. I love that store... Then, we drove to Salina.

Just before we got there, we encountered another tornado warning. For a while, we were between two storms, and the sun was setting. There was a spectacular double complete rainbow. I couldn't take a picture through the windshield because the darkness made the flash go off, so I took a video of it.

The Best Western hotel in Salina is filthy and makes your skin crawl. But the employees are super friendly, the breakfast is good (that room is actually clean), and best of all, the indoor pool is almost as warm as a hot tub. It's wonnnnnnderrrrfullll! We swam in the morning, and then I drove the rest of the way home.

Yesterday, Josh started his new job! He is in training with the regular security guards right now, and then later he will be trained by the communications department. So far, happy, happy! The only part that still irks me is that I've been asking about the schedule since the FIRST interview, and he's already had his first day of work and still can't tell me what his schedule is going to be like - not even the training schedule. I had to let mom arrange to watch the kids this weekend, even though she's done more than anyone could possibly think to ask for this summer already.

Poor Mom. She quit smoking again, but also had a very bad cold. But she sounded much better today. She's getting better. (Now my dad is catching it!!)

This weekend is taiko, taiko, and TAIKO! Friday is the Zoo, Saturday Drunken Fish, and Sunday Missouri Scholars Academy. And tonight is practice for these shows. I'm eager to get started! I'm on a new part for Tobihi, but otherwise it's stuff I'm very familiar with. (I wish I hadn't eaten that Red Robin Cheeseburger, though!!)

By the way, remember how Josh's uncle kept asking him to come and help Grandma move home every time he had a day off, and it never actually happened? She moved home while we were gone. Guess Josh wasn't needed so much after all. He visited after work yesterday and said she's looking good.

Well, if I ever get an idea of Josh's schedule, we might plan a karaoke night. Wanna come?

Hope you have a wonderful Tuesday! Take care.

...Narp?

Saw Hot Fuzz the other day. A good romp. Last night we saw Showtime. We must be on a police comedy kick.

So, Josh went in to work Friday, and came right back. He was a seasonal employee at Lowes...and the season ended. So he was able to come with the kids to my taiko performance on Saturday! Heather, Jason and Renee came, too, and so did Sarah D. They all sat together by Bill and Carter. We love the Macneils.

It was hot. We were all sweating before we even unloaded anything. Then we had to put on our happis. I was particularly sad to add socks. The performance wasn't our best, but it seriously beat the hot outdoor show we did last June at World Foods. The audience seemed small to me, but someone mentioned that you could hear us all the way across the lake, so maybe there were people secretly enjoying us all over the area. Heather's daughter took pictures with my camera. Lots of them were of people with their heads cut off, or of just heads, but on the whole she did well, and it was very nice of her to do it at all. I was very happy to have family and friends in the audience.

After the show we loaded and went to UMSL to put all the drums away. Then I took Michelle home. We talked about how all we wanted was dinner and showers. Imagine my surprise when I came home and had company. Our neighbors were here. So, first we helped Josh carry furniture to the basement (it had been in the garage and he had been waiting for someone to stop by and help him get it down the stairs). Then they played cards and I watched in a semi-coma. I probably wasn't much fun. I'm sorry about that, but on the other hand, I didn't get dinner or a shower. Dazed and glazed was about as much as I could handle.

And now what do you think we are planning? We are leaving in the morning to visit Brother for a few days! I am not the Last Minute Vacation type of girl. This is difficult for me. Mom came yesterday to take Jake for the rest of the week and I'm already starting to pack. It all seems so fast. But we are going to have lots of fun.

Today, however, is even less fun than I was planning for it to be. Josh and Uncle Jim are off to a wine...uh...thing for the day. The idea was that I do laundry all day, bathe the kids, then go fetch Michelle and go to taiko. I hadn't planned on Pogo.

Pogo is Uncle Jim's Chihuahua. He's orange with a white face, because he's not so young anymore. Pogo is staying here for the day. I was not warned at all. And Pogo is not happy to be here. He was been whining for 2 1/2 hours now, and I have to keep the doors to the downstairs and my room closed, because he is not ashamed of grabbing stuff. And he has smelly gas. But the most important problem is that I can't leave the room! First of all, Pogo seems to know that I am his babysitter, and follows me around. The other problem is that he is an old nervous dog, and bites when he feels threatened. And he's not used to kids. Fun. When the @#$* am I supposed to shower? Oh, and another thing. I can't put him in the back yard because he is small enough to fit between the fence and the gate.

RRR! And now I can't possibly leave until they get back. I really hope I'm not late. I hate being late.

Josh starts his first day at Pinkerton on Monday. That's very exciting. Yesterday we got lots of business stuff done, which felt great, some cleaning which was much needed, and I also made teriaki chicken legs, green beans, instant potatoes with garlic and cheese, and corn bread. Josh and I also finished off the chocolate pudding pie that I made Sunday.

I really need this dog to fall asleep or something. GAH! I'm losing my mind! What did I do to deserve this???

I miss you, Jake. *Sniff*

Well, I have plenty of laundry I should be doing. I'm just going to close my eyes (or ears in this case) and think of Colorado!

I am sending hugs to you all!
